FIX: CTD issue firing when zoomed with Scout
JobeJoe
HI All,

I used to play on the DoGz Gun Game servers regularly, but I started having a crash issue that eventually caused me to step away because I couldn't figure out what was causing it.

The problem was that whenever I used the Scout, especially after joining a server, after a map change, or during the warm-up round, I would zoom in and then immediately crash to desktop as soon as I fired. There was no error message, no useful Event Viewer entry, and Steam didn't report anything helpful either.

At first I thought it might be specific to DoGz, but after a lot of testing I was able to reproduce the same crash on other servers as well. I went through a long list of troubleshooting steps including verifying game files, changing display modes, disabling overlays, rebuilding caches, testing offline games, and several other suggested fixes with no success.

The workaround that finally appears to have solved it came from a support forum discussion that actually mentioned the DoGz server by name. The fix was to set the following console commands:

hud_draw_active_reticle 0

hud_draw_fixed_reticle 0

Then run:

host_writeconfig

After applying those settings, I've been unable to reproduce the crash despite multiple map changes and repeated Scout use.

If anyone else is experiencing crashes to desktop when firing scoped weapons such as the Scout or AWP, especially after the 64-bit update, hopefully this saves you some time and frustration.

Thanks, and hopefully this helps someone else track down the issue. Someone actually reference your server when they were posting. Github article here: https://github.co...ssues/7112
