Building a rig for a dying man
Herpes
So, my dad is friends with a guy who was in the Navy, and basically now has lung cancer because of the asbestos they had on the old naval ships. Long story short, he has a considerable chunk of change coming his way from a settlement (but is basically told he has few years to live). Since I'm sitting around with very little to do these days since my car crash and build an occasional computer, and he's deciding to put me to work.

The guy is a big farmville fan. Other than that I don't see him busting out BF3 on max settings, but he wants a rig that does everything in a snap. I built him a rig a year ago that was pretty decent, and he wants something even more beefy! The idea is to do this without going all freaking top of the line fugly case mods and water cooled rigs. It's for an old guy who views that frill as useless (I do too to be honest. lol)

Needless to say, I'm an AMD kind of guy because I'm a poor college student and shoot for price/performance like noone's business. Unfortunately right now, since he wants something balls to the wall I'm looking around at Intel's i7 Sandy bridge series. I'm a bit hazy on the intricacies with Intel, so any decent advice would be appreciated.

Rig so far:
- Monitor/keyboard/mouse - will be recycled from past rigs
- Win 7 Pro (or Ultimate)
- SSD's, not sure how many or how big yet.
- Looking at setting him up with an AMD HD6970 and relevant power supply once I nail down the stuff below.

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000 - http://www.newegg...19-115-070

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - http://www.newegg...6813131791

Memory: 2 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2 GB ) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 - http://www.newegg...6820231277

Would this CPU/MOBO/Memory combination work? I can't really find anything saying what specific ram the CPU will work with... Not sure if it matters, but when I was building my last AMD rig it was always labeled clearly what it was compatible with. Once this stuff gets nailed down I'll start moving onto the other parts...

Again, thanks for any relevant help Grin I feel like such an Intel noobie Pfft

I'm surprised you didn't go with an unlocked 6 core AMD. They'll screem like nothin.

Which 6 core? The last I had heard with the numbers coming out on benches I heard the AMD's 6 cores were too slow in the face of the Sandy Bridge's...
